The first test game of the season started with a lot of enthusiasm. The Red Bulls without Thomas Raffl, who was spared after a hard week of training, and Lucas Thaler (Bundesheer) set a high tempo and dominated the match for long stretches. However, the goals were initially scored by the Swiss. Arno Nussbaumer (10th) scored after an unfortunate deflection by Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen and Lino Martschini deflected a blue-liner unstoppable (15th). The Red Bulls had their first top chances after good combinations and Chay Genoway with a shot from the bar (8th), but could not get past Swiss goalkeeper Luca Hollenstein.
Just 11 seconds after the restart, Benjamin Nissner pulled away from the half-high slot to score Salzburg's first goal of the preseason. The Red Bulls continued to make the play, but now often put themselves behind with penalties and the Swiss on the offensive. Then in the 37th minute Louis Robin scored after a short solo to lead 3:1, which lasted until the second intermission.
In the final third, both teams played on equal terms with alternating opportunities without losing speed. The final point was set by EV Zug with a goal into the empty net in the final minute, thus fixing the 4:1 victory. The Red Bulls thus lost their pre-season opener against the Swiss semi-finalists of the last NL season, but showed an appealing game in which the chance exploitation was not yet as desired.
Head Coach Oliver David
"We started a little slow going in, but then found our way. From the second period on, we had the better opportunities at 5 vs. 5, even though we had to play shorthanded a few times. We didn't score often, but we created really good chances. But it was a good feeling in the dressing room even after the game and we gained a lot of knowledge from a game against a really high quality team."
