New CHL game rules arouse curiosityLukas Schreier: "With the new penalty rule, it will definitely be more exciting"// FriendlyIn spring, the Champions Hockey League published the change of three rules of the game, which should make the game more goal-oriented. The Red Bulls will play under these new rules for the first time on Sunday against Mannheim in Kitzbühel.
When the Red Bulls start the Regular Season of the Champions Hockey League on September 1 in Skellefteå, they will not only have to deal with a selection of the 24 best European clubs, but will also have to adjust to three new rules of the game, which for the time being will only be applied in the European top division. These concern over- and shorthanded play and are intended to make the game even more exciting and intense.
The new CHL rules
Change 1 | Minor penalties are treated the same as major penalties. That means: A team that has caused a minor penalty remains outnumbered, even if the opposing team scores a goal. In any case, the penalty will last for the entire period.
Change 2 | Indicated penalties are always enforced and served even if the team in numerical superiority scores a goal.
Change 3 | A goal scored while shorthanded erases a minor penalty in progress. When a team scores a shorthander (shorthanded goal), it will be rewarded with the cancellation of the remaining penalty time for the player with the shortest remaining time in the penalty box.
So what does this mean for the players? We asked a forward and a defender what they think of the new rules.
Lukas Schreier, defender "The fact that penalties are usually decisive for the game is nothing new. With the new tightened rules, which are all about penalties, it will be even more exciting in the CHL and you have to be even more careful not to take penalties if possible. Defensively it will be more intensive, because you almost always play two minutes with four players, because shorthanders are the exception. On the other hand, you have even more advantages on the power play and can score more than one goal. I expect the power play to be even more intense. The game will be more offensive overall and more chances could be created. I think it's cool, but you still have to play more disciplined."
Ali Wukovits, forward "Interesting and attractive, there will be more goals for sure. Depending on how well the special teams are set up, it will be harder for some teams and better for others. So against strong opponents it will be even harder, because you tend to take more penalties against good opponents. For the fans, it will certainly be more attractive because there will be more time on the power play and therefore even more scoring action. I really like it, playing power play is a lot of fun and you have more opportunities to score goals."
How this looks in practice can already be seen next Sunday, August 20, at the Red Bulls' test game in Kitzbühel against Adler Mannheim, because there the new CHL regulations will be played for the first time.
