Without much ado, the opening game of Red Bulls Salute began, which was initially better accepted by the tall Finns. The Red Bulls soon got up to speed and played on an equal footing with Helsinki. After the defense of Julius Nättinen's solo run by Salzburg's goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen, the Red Bulls went into the lead with a blue-liner from Mario Huber (13th) in the power play. Only two minutes later, the striker fired again from half distance (15th) and set the 2:0 half-time lead in an incredibly intense game in the first third.
In the second half, the Finns started again powerfully and this time capitalized on their strong game. Petteri Lindbohm (26th) and Iiro Pakarinen (29th) both scored in the power play and equalized. The Red Bulls had to do a lot of defensive work afterwards, but came back dangerously close to the opponent's goal in the last five minutes. After 40 minutes it was 2:2 in a still hard-fought game.
After the second break, the Salzburgers immediately found their way back into their aggressive offensive game and made the final section open. Both teams had a fast up and down and came to chances on both sides. Benjamin Nissner (47th) missed the possible lead after a pass in front of the goal in the power play, later (54th) the disc hit the post at Salzburg's goal. Almost in counterattack (54th) Thomas Raffl scored with Lucas Thaler to the 3:2 lead. This was equalized again only two minutes later (56th), Iiro Pakarinen deflected an unstoppable distance shot. In the intense final phase, Luke Martin finally scored the decisive 4:3 goal and an empty net goal sealed the 5:3 victory of the Finns, who had delivered a duel on an equal footing with the Red Bulls.
