Introducing Rögle BK
For the third time in the last six years, the southern Swedes reached the national championship final last season. Once again, they came close to the SHL trophy, the Le Mattrofén, but for the third time, they were defeated in the final; most recently by Skellefteå AIK, who prevailed 4-1 and will face Salzburg again in October at the end of the regular season.

Remarkably, in the quarterfinals, Rögle trailed Färjestad BK 0-3 in the series, but then won four consecutive games to advance to the semifinals, where they eliminated the Växjö Lakers – also on Salzburg's CHL wish list this year – with a 4-1 series victory. They ultimately fell short of the final title, but Rögle remains the only Swedish team that, while still without a domestic title, achieved a major triumph in their very first appearance in the top European league in 2022.

Red Bulls prepare for Champions Hockey
Four years ago, the Red Bulls faced Rögle BK in the Round of 16. After a 3-1 home win in the first leg, the Red Bulls were optimistic about their chances in Ängelholm, but ultimately suffered a decisive 1-5 defeat. Rögle would later go on to win the tournament. A certain Marco Kasper, who would later launch his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, also played for the Swedish team that season.
In the following 2022/23 season, Rögle again had a flawless group stage, winning all six games. However, they were unable to overcome Tappara Tampere, the eventual CHL champions, in the quarterfinals.
The fact that the Red Bulls beat Rögle BK 5-1 in 2008 during the former European Trophy in Sweden – the game was played in Halmstad, a 45-minute drive north of Ängelholm – is only mentioned here for the sake of complete statistics.

Rögle BK has also left its mark at the Red Bulls Salute
While Scandinavian teams had a reputation a few years ago for taking it easy in the preseason, that's likely a thing of the past. The Växjö Lakers won the Red Bulls Salute as recently as 2024. And last year, it was Rögle BK who celebrated the tournament victory in Zell am See with wins against Red Bull Munich and in the final against EV Zug – both games ending 4-1.

Head Coach Dan Tangnes Deeply Rooted in Ängelholm
Norwegian Dan Tangnes (47) is one of only two non-Swedish head coaches in the SHL (along with Canadian Cam Abbott at Färjestad BK). His history in Ängelholm, however, goes back much further. The former forward spent his youth there and entered the coaching profession quite early, at the age of 26. He started with the Rögle youth program, then became head coach, before moving to Linköping for four years. From 2018 to 2025, he coached EV Zug, celebrating two National League titles with the Swiss team, before returning to Ängelholm last season and leading the team straight to the SHL finals.

Alan Letang, Head Coach EC RedBull Salzburg
“The away game against Rögle is a huge challenge for us. They play classic Swedish hockey – with excellent skating and good puck management. To win there, we have to stick rigidly to our game plan and show a high level of mental discipline. Clean puck management and disciplined defense will be crucial.”
