Impressive tradition
With its 16 Finnish championship titles, Ilves Tampere is one of the most traditional ice hockey clubs in Europe. The club was founded in 1931 and, together with city rival Tappara, is considered the heart of the ice hockey city of Tampere. The team plays in the ultra-modern Nokia Arena, which is one of the most spectacular arenas in Europe with a capacity of around 13,500 spectators - where passion, history and innovation come together. However, the CHL match with the Red Bulls will be played in the Hakametsä, the Finns' former home arena with a capacity of 7,300 spectators.
Sporting success
In the 2024/25 Liiga season, Ilves finished second in the main round with an impressive 111 points from 60 games. With 176 goals scored and 145 goals conceded, the team showed both offensive penetration and a solid defensive performance. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals - a bitter end against the eventual finalists Kärpät.
Ilves also competed internationally: The team competed in the group stage of the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League, but failed to qualify for the knockout round. In the end, the team finished in 19th place overall - a result that the team aims to significantly improve on in the new season.
Modern arena with Europe's largest video cube
The Lions have been playing their home games in the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, which opened in 2022, for two years now. The multi-purpose arena seats 12,000 spectators. A special eye-catcher in the truest sense of the word is the largest LED video cube installed in an ice hockey stadium in Europe, measuring 12x12x8 meters on a side and weighing a total of 21 tons. Champions Hockey League | Mode
24 teams play in the regular season. Each team has six games against six different opponents, which are allocated by lot. This means that each team has three home games and three away games against six different opponents. Teams from the same league cannot play each other in the regular season. The results of the regular season (3-point ranking) are used to produce a ranking of all 24 teams.
The first 16 teams qualify for the play-off round of 16, with 1st playing against 16th, 2nd against 15th and so on. This results in the playoff tree up to the final. The play-off matches are decided by a first and second leg, with the total number of goals (aggregate score) being decisive in the event of a tie. Only the final is decided in an all-important match.
