Oliver David was awarded the Golden Lion for his achievements as Head Coach of the Red Bulls ice hockey team at the Leonidas Gala in Salzburg today. The 46-year-old American defended the win2day ICE Hockey League title with the Red Bulls and his coaching staff in his very first season in 2023/24 and led Salzburg to the first three-peat in league history, winning the title three times in a row.
In the current season, he achieved the second-best result in the club's history in the European premier league with the Red Bulls in the Champions Hockey League by reaching the quarter-finals and is currently starting the final of the win2day ICE Hockey League again with his team.
Oliver David was unable to accept the award in person as he is already in Klagenfurt with the team ahead of tomorrow's first ICE Hockey League final against the KAC. Helmut Schlögl, Managing Director Pro, represented him on stage at the gala in Salzburg. Oliver David is the second Red Bulls head coach to be named Coach of the Year by SN after Pierre Pagé (2011).

“The award means a lot to me. It's the daily work with the players that challenges us coaches and makes it so exciting. Shaping a team and developing the right chemistry. I was only able to achieve this because I have a strong coaching team at my side with Ben Cooper, Daniel Petersson and Markus Kerschbaumer, with coaches from four different countries from all over the world. Together we have achieved this. Thank you very much.”
The Leonidas Gala has been an integral part of the Austrian sports world for 40 years. Every year, the “Salzburger Nachrichten” focuses on athletes, coaches and rookies and honors their sporting achievements in the past season.
