Course of the match
The encounter was fast-paced from the very first second. Both teams set the first offensive accents, but the first goal of the match was scored by Helsinki. In a 2-on-1 situation, Rasmus Hokkanen managed to beat the young Salzburg goalkeeper Mika Haim - the 18-year-old was celebrating his Juniors debut - in the 7th minute of the game. From then on, the Red Bulls tried to restore the equalizer, but slowed themselves down several times with penalties.
The Finns got off to a better start in the second period and increased the score to 5:0 with four goals in quick succession. Jonathan Hirschovits beat Haim with a powerful shot over his right shoulder (24'), Jesper Kuhta converted a breakaway just 18 seconds later (24') and Rasmus Hokkanen increased the lead to 4:0 (26'). Helsinki then established themselves in Salzburg's third and Sundman Alex scored to make it 5:0 (27.). The Juniors now did everything they could to get back into the game, but were unable to find an answer to their opponents' offense. IFK Helsinki managed to get a foothold in Salzburg's third time and time again, with a lot of traffic in front of the goal taking away Mika Haim's vision. Edward Grönholm increased the score to 6:0 in the 33rd minute of the third period.
In the final period, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors got back to their usual game. They put Helsinki under increased pressure with quick moves and strong passing combinations. However, the Finns remained dangerous at all times with their quick transition play and did not slow down their pace. The game ran the length of the ice with chances on both sides. It took until the 59th minute of the game for Daniel Assavolyuk to move at speed from the right side in front of the goal and beat Finnish goalkeeper Harri Juntunen for the first time to make the final score 1:6.
