Course of the game
With Peter Schneider - the 32-year-old forward made his comeback after seven games out injured - but without Cameron Schilling, who was suspended for one game, the Red Bulls went into the fifth semi-final duel against Bolzano. And Salzburg started well, dictating the first few minutes of the game; Chay Genoway with a one-timer in the slot (2nd), Dennis Robertson with a good shooting position from half-distance (6th) and also a couple of concealed shots from distance. The Red Bulls took the lead on the first powerplay, Drake Rymsha netting through the legs of Bolzano goalie Sam Harvey, who was well screened. This was followed by two incredible saves from Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen, who saved top chances from Daniel Mantenuto and Angelo Miceli in succession when they appeared alone in front of him (11th). The visitors remained dangerous after that and from then on it was an up-and-down affair with chances at both ends. Atte Tolvanen was on hand to save Daniel Mantenuto's top chance at the right post (16') and so the Red Bulls went into the first break with a one-goal lead.
The Red Bulls were again the driving force at the start of the second period. After a powerful powerplay with a Peter Schneider shot (23') that just missed the net, Mario Huber tried a lob under the crossbar at the near post (24'). Bolzano also came back into the game and made pinpricks, but the Red Bulls had the better phases and put more pressure on Bolzano. Mario Huber had the best chance of the game up to that point when he found himself alone in front of Sam Harvey (33'). But then the visitors were suddenly wide awake and Luca Frigo deflected a cross-field pass directly into the net to equalize at 1:1 (36'). Bolzano continued to press during a powerplay, but then Mario Huber was sent on his way by Dennis Robertson, skipped past the goalkeeper with great skill and made it 2:1 at the break while short-handed.
The Red Bulls had the first real opportunities in the final period with Chay Genoway and Mario Huber on the powerplay (47'). Both teams played for the next goal, and Salzburg's Phillip Sinn also hit the disc into the net from distance, but it didn't count due to goalkeeper obstruction. And just a few seconds later, Luca Frigo equalized 2:2 with a backhand shot (50'). In the 55th minute, Thomas Raffl suddenly found himself in front of goal. But then Dylan Di Perna shot from distance, right into the corner of the net and gave the visitors a 3:2 lead. That was to remain the final score, even though the Red Bulls risked everything again to equalize. The South Tyroleans thus won their fifth game and have a first match puck in the semi-final series.
Statement by Mario Huber
"We didn't give them much and the chances they had, they made. We had a lot of chances, played our game the way we wanted to. But then it went against us. Now we can prove ourselves. We know what we have to do and will attack 100% in Bolzano."
