After a pressure-filled opening phase of the Lions, the Red Bulls got better into the game with a power play (5.) and had first opportunities. However, Zurich took the lead from a counterattack (8th), Jesper Fröden used a cross pass at the right post, which Salzburg's goalkeeper David Kickert (18-year-old German academy goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner was the first backup today, Atte Tolvanen was missing with a cold) had to let pass. The combinations of the Red Bulls became better and better after that, sometimes compelling chances were created. But Zurich remained equally under pressure in the first fast section and took the 1-0 advantage into the first break.
In the second period, a racy game developed in which both teams took turns to create opportunities on an equal footing and did not miss a single duel. David Kickert and his counterpart Simon Hrubec regularly distinguished themselves on dangerous shots. The Red Bulls were forced to make a great effort on another dangerous Swiss power play before the second intermission, but they prevented the Swiss from falling further behind.
In the final period, a strong David Kickert again prevented a larger deficit, among other things, during a long 3:5 shorthanded period. The Red Bulls were now again rarely in good shooting positions and had a hard time with the build-up play against the compact Swiss. From the 50th minute onwards, the Salzburgers suddenly turned up the heat again, but were unable to get several good shots through. After a rousing final period, it finally remained 0:1, which meant that the Red Bulls had to give way to the ZSC Lions in the fight for third place.
Salzburg forward Peter Hochkofler:
"It was not easy today. They pressed brutally and we had a hard time getting the disc out the back. Overall, there were too few chances that we could have converted. Defensively it was better than yesterday against Helsinki, but there are still things to improve. Anyway, until the CHL start next week we want to make another big step forward."
