3:6 defeat at CHL final rehearsalRed Bulls lose in last preparation game against Adler Mannheim// FriendlyEC Red Bull Salzburg lost 3-6 to DEL club Adler Mannheim in the final test game of the new season in Kitzbühel, the first game under the new CHL rules.
The game against the eight-time German champion - most recently in 2019 - started at a very high tempo. The clash between the two teams was played for the first time under the new CHL rules. However, the Red Bulls without Tyler Lewington and Lukas Schreier, who were spared in this preparation game, had to concede the first goal already in the fifth minute of the game through Kris Bennett. Despite several good chances, the Salzburgers did not manage to beat the goalkeeper from Mannheim. The Eagles took advantage of this again and increased the lead to 2:0 through Maximilian Eisenmenger (10th). EC Red Bull Salzburg then fought back and took the upper hand in the game, but still had to score 0:3 through Daniel Fischbuch (19th) shortly before the end of the first period.
In the second period, the game became tougher and the Red Bulls created some good chances. In the 24th minute of the game it was Tim Harnisch who scored the first goal for Salzburg after a pass from Mario Huber. After that, the game went up and down, but was marked by some penalties on both sides. Adler Mannheim took advantage of these penalties and increased the score to 5:1 through David Wolf (33rd) and Jyrki Jokipakka (36th).
In the final period, the Adler pressed and forced the Red Bulls to defend, but Salzburg's goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen made good saves to prevent the DEL team from conceding another goal. With this backstop, the Red Bulls took over the game again and created some scoring chances, but failed again against the Mannheim goalkeeper. The Adler went up through Max Gildon (50th), but EC Red Bull Salzburg did not let this put them out of the game: Tim Harnisch (53rd) scored to 2:6 and Thomas Raffl (54th) in overtime, after a pass from Peter Schneider, to the final score of 3:6. At the request of both teams, a 5-minute overtime was played after the final score of 3:6, in which the 3-on-3 game mode was tested. Mannheim won this overtime with a goal by Matthias Plachta (64th).
Head Coach Oliver David "We have ended the preparation with Mannheim with a very strong opponent. That's exactly what we wanted. Losing is no fun, but we gained a lot of important knowledge in this game. It was also very important for us to play with the new CHL rules for the first time. Especially when you get a goal against in shorthanded, you stay in reduced strength. This is very demanding mentally for the players! The level of play will now increase even more at the Red Bulls Salute, so this year's preparation was very good for us."
