Skellefteå AIK vs. EC Red Bull Salzburg
The Situation
The roles are clearly defined heading into the final game of the regular season. Hosts Skellefteå AIK enter the match as reigning Swedish champions, currently sitting in fourth place with a record of four wins and one loss. Head coach Daniel Hermansson’s squad also holds fourth place in the domestic league. This marks Skellefteå’s eleventh season in Europe’s premier competition—a strong indicator (along with their five Swedish championship titles) that the club is consistently among the best and most experienced teams in the SHL.
After a slow start to the season, the Red Bulls had recently regained momentum in the win2day ICE Hockey League and climbed into the middle of the pack; however, they suffered a setback in terms of performance during yesterday’s 3–5 loss in Klagenfurt. In the CHL, the Red Bulls sit in 20th place—meaning they will miss the playoffs—but they aim to use this match against the formidable Swedes to sharpen their form and attempt to surprise the favorites through sheer effort, a unified team performance, and smart tactics.
Intense Weeks Take Their Toll
For the past three weeks, the Red Bulls have been playing three games a week across the ICE and CHL combined. Last Friday saw them travel to Székesfehérvár, followed by Klagenfurt on Sunday, and today they head straight to Skellefteå. Head Coach Alan Letang made a last-minute decision to cancel the scheduled on-ice practice in Sweden, opting for an off-ice workout instead. Furthermore, in addition to Thomas Raffl—who is still recovering from injury—Peter Schneider and Michael Raffl also did not make the trip due to minor injuries. On the positive side, young academy players Isak Norlin and Benedikt Krainer are once again getting the chance to prove themselves on the CHL stage.

Statement from Peter Hochkofler
"There isn't much time to overthink things. We need to focus on taking small steps every day—learning from our games while immediately looking ahead to the next one. We know we’re up against a very strong team, but we still want to take another step forward as a squad and iron out past mistakes. Skellefteå is one of the best teams in Europe, but why not take them on? We respect them, but we certainly don't need to shy away from the challenge."
