Highlights Moser Medical Graz99ers vs. Red Bulls
Game Summary
The game was immediately intense. From the start, there were hard-fought battles and good scoring opportunities. Kasper Kotkansalo had the first clear-cut chance for Graz with a one-timer from the face-off circle (5th minute). In the 10th minute, Dennis Robertson was forced to leave the ice after a hard check, but the subsequent five-minute power play wasn't enough for the Red Bulls to score. The game was fast-paced but became increasingly physical, with penalties and fistfights on the rise. There were also shots on goal. Michael Raffl had Salzburg's best chance on a 2-on-1 (17th minute), but Graz's goalie Maxim Lagacé made a strong save. Salzburg's netminder, Atte Tolvanen, then stopped a mid-range shot from Kevin Roy (18th minute). After a rough first period, the teams went into the locker rooms scoreless.
In the dying seconds of a first-period power play, the Red Bulls took the lead shortly after the restart when Michael Raffl deflected Travis St. Denis's shot into the net amidst the scramble (21st minute). The home team then took control, applying heavy pressure first on the power play and then at even strength. A long-range shot out of nowhere rattled past Tolvanen and hit the post (27th minute). And then the puck was in the Salzburg net, with Michael Schiechl instinctively scoring to tie the game 1-1 (28th minute). Graz continued to skillfully control the puck in the offensive zone in the heated atmosphere and took the lead for the first time. Nick Bailen scored on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 2-1 (31st minute). Only then did Salzburg open up their play again, but they rarely threatened the Salzburg net. Even a power play before the second intermission, despite opportunities, was played too hastily, and Graz led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The final period saw both teams playing an open, attacking style. In the 46th minute, Travis St. Denis deflected a hard long-range shot from Philipp Wimmer and scored the equalizer. Salzburg was now on the offensive, and Graz struggled to get out of their defensive zone. But the momentum shifted, and the game became a back-and-forth affair, with both teams effectively canceling each other out for a long stretch. Then, Salzburg's Florian Baltram broke through on the right side and fired a shot into the far top corner (52nd minute). Shortly afterward, the goal scorer had to leave the ice injured after a reckless hit. A frantic final phase ensued, filled with emotion and penalties. Atte Tolvanen made a crucial save against Paul Huber right in front of him (57th minute). In Graz's final push with six skaters, Travis St. Denis intercepted a cross-ice pass in the final minute while shorthanded and sealed the victory for the Red Bulls with an empty-net goal, making the final score 4-2 in the Graz bunker.
Statement Thomas Raffl
Statement by Thomas Raffl
"It was the expected tough game between two good, well-coached teams. It was difficult to find space and create scoring chances. And it was a close game for a long time, which we were ultimately able to win."
