Red Bulls' narrow CHL defeat against DEL vice-champion IngolstadtDouble strike in second period led to 2-1 win for the guest team// CHLEC Red Bull Salzburg suffered a 2-1 (0-0, 1-2, 0-0) defeat at home to ERC Ingolstadt in the Champions Hockey League Regular Season. The Salzburgers showed their best CHL game so far, but were not rewarded for it.
Forward Florian Baltram "It was our best CHL game so far today. In the end, the little things have made the difference again. Two small mistakes and the Ingolstadt was ice cold and efficient. We had our good chances and many good shifts and in the end we were also a little bit lucky."
The Red Bulls started with a lot of pressure and possession, but were unable to create any top chances on two initial power plays. After that, the game went up and down, with the teams often neutralizing each other. As the game progressed, the Red Bulls became more dangerous in front of goal at intervals and created traffic in front of Ingolstadt's goalie Michael Garteig, but he also stood firm on good shots from half-distance by Mario Huber and Thomas Raffl. Defensively, the Red Bulls had everything under control and could rely on goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen, who held twice against strikers appearing alone in front of him in a shorthanded situation. After an even first period, the game went into the dressing rooms goalless.
At the beginning of the second period, the home side got the ball rolling, Chay Genoway beat the Ingolstadt goalie and scored a farmer's trick to take the lead (22nd). The Red Bulls immediately went after it and continued to press for the goal, the game became more intense. But Ingolstadt also increased the tempo, both teams now took turns in the offensive zone and created opportunities. Towards the end of the period, the Red Bulls dictated the game more again, but ran into a 2-on-1 counterattack, which Andrew Rowe finished to equalize 1-1 (37th). Just two minutes later, the same scorer added to his tally, scoring alone on the left side to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
In the final period, Salzburg again came close to equalizing on an early power play in a game that was becoming more hectic and emotional. The Red Bulls stepped up the pace and put Ingolstadt in trouble time and again, now shooting from all angles. In the 54th minute Ali Wukovits drove a solo through the defense, but could not score. Also in the final phase, the Red Bulls with six field players continued to be close to a possible goal, alone Peter Schneider with two hammer shots from half-distance, but now also had no shooting luck, ultimately could not equalize and thus remain undeservedly without points in the third CHL game.
